Standard essay lengths
Most instructors specify a range rather than an exact number, and staying within 10% of the target is the safest rule. If a brief says 1,500 words, anything from 1,350 to 1,650 usually reads as on-target.
- High school essay: 300–1,000 words
- College application essay: 500–650 words
- Undergraduate coursework essay: 1,500–3,000 words
- Master's essay or term paper: 3,000–5,000 words
- Dissertation chapter: 8,000–12,000 words
Words to pages
Double-spaced 12pt Times New Roman gives roughly 275 words per page; single-spaced gives about 550. So a 5-page double-spaced essay lands near 1,375 words.
Hitting a target without padding
Add evidence rather than adjectives. If you are short, introduce a counterargument or a second example. If you are long, cut throat-clearing openers and merge sentences that restate the same idea. Paste your draft into the editor on the homepage to watch the count change as you trim.
